The NIWA research ship RV Tangaroa, on the her way to the Antarctica, February 2008.
This watercolour painting depicts her powering through one of the many but short Southern Ocean storms we encountered on the voyage to the Ross Sea.
The Southern ocean, encompassing all the sea around and north of Antarctica, is the least hospitable ocean in the world, I think of it as the great storm factory.
